Heinz turned ketchup into art supplies in 2000. Kids could squeeze out Blastin’ Green, Funky Purple, and Stellar Blue ketchup to draw on their food. The green version launched with the Shrek movie and sold 10 million bottles in seven months. Parents loved the novelty until they started scrubbing colored stains from clothes and kitchen walls. After selling 25 million bottles, Heinz discontinued the condiment when the cleanup became too much work.

Balsamic vinegar replaced white vinegar in 2011. The goal was to create an upscale ketchup to compete with craft ketchups hitting the supermarket shelves. The result was darker, sharper, and more complex than regular ketchup. Heinz sold it first on Facebook, which crashed under demand. At $2.49 versus $1.89 for regular ketchup, most shoppers stuck with the cheaper option. Seven years later, Heinz admitted defeat and returned to basics.

A Heinz executive’s daughter sparked this idea when she wondered about adding cooking glitter to ketchup. Launching exclusively in Canada in 1997, edible sparkles were mixed into red ketchup. Heinz sent mascots to 4,000 schools and included free Crayola crayons with each bottle. Kids loved the sparkles for about six months before moving on to the next shiny thing.

Heinz topped frozen pizza with baked beans in 2003. Mozzarella and cheddar cheese joined the beans on tomato sauce. Some people tried it once. Most avoided it completely. The frozen pizza was discontinued quickly, though Iceland supermarkets brought it back in 2022 with a sausage version.

Heinz has been making pickles since the 1860s, but ended this 150-year run in 2024. Its most famous canned pickles, Ploughman’s Pickle, was a chunky yellow relish containing carrots, swede, cauliflower, and onion in vinegar. British customers spread it on baked potatoes and cheese platters. Unlike competitor Branston pickle, this one was gluten-free. Fans mourned losing their favorite condiment after more than a century.
Discontinued: September 2024
Organic beans hit shelves in the early 2020s using the same tomato sauce base as regular Heinz beans. Customers called them “the best on the market” and paid premium prices. Heinz cut them anyway in September 2024, choosing to focus resources on standard varieties instead of maintaining a higher-priced organic line.
Discontinued: 2024
Small sausages swam in Heinz beans and tomato sauce for decades. In 2024, Heinz partnered with Richmond Sausages to “improve” the recipe. Customers hated the watery new version and called it “awful.” Some hoarded remaining cans of the original before it was gone forever.
Discontinued: 2019 (Limited Edition)
Heinz created special packaging for Ed Sheeran on National Ketchup Day 2019. The musician’s famous love of Heinz ketchup inspired the collaboration. Same ketchup, different bottle. Social media buzzed for a few weeks before the limited edition ended.
Discontinued: 2024 (Collector’s Item)
Fourteen Heinz sauces got mixed into one experimental bottle. Chip Sauce, Truffle Mayo, Pickle Ketchup, and Sweet Chilli all blended together. Heinz made exactly 100 bottles with creative agency W+K London. They gave away every bottle instead of selling them. It created a lot of publicity for the vintage brand, but it was never meant for your local supermarket.
Discontinued: Date Unknown
Truffle flavoring elevated regular Heinz mayo in 2020. The company aimed at gourmet markets, suggesting customers use it on everything from fries to steak. It launched with Lemon & Black Pepper and Garlic & Caramelised Onion flavors. All three premium varieties failed to catch on and quietly disappeared.
Discontinued: 2024 (Limited Edition)
This pink sauce, in collaboration with Mattel, celebrated Barbie’s 65th anniversary in spring 2024. Heinz mixed vegan mayo with barbecue sauce and added bright pink coloring. Only the UK and Spain got this collaboration during the Barbiecore trend, following the hit movie. The novelty lasted through the promotional period, then vanished like most limited editions.
