1960-1998 (U.K. and Ireland)

This was the original slogan for Starburst when it was first introduced as “Opal Fruits” in the United Kingdom in 1960. Murray Walker, the famous British sports commentator, created it. The full advertising jingle said:

“Opal Fruits—made to make your mouth water”
“Fresh with the tang of citrus”
“four refreshing fruit flavours”
“orange, lemon, strawberry, lime”
“Opal Fruits—made to make your mouth water!”

This slogan established the “mouth-watering” and “juicy” theme that would define Starburst marketing for years to come.

TURN LOOSE THE JUICE

This slogan appeared on vintage ads and collectible frisbees when Starburst was trying to penetrate the U.S. market. It brought the U.K. juicy theme to U.S. audiences. However, the company used more dynamic, action-oriented language that aligned with American advertising trends of the era.

THE CHEWS THAT OOZE

This tagline was used for Starburst Choozers, lozenge-shaped chews with liquid fruit juice centers. Each packet contained three flavors:

  • Pineapple & Orange

SHARE SOMETHING JUICY

This slogan preceded “Unexplainably Juicy” and was used extensively in digital marketing campaigns. The campaign featured a redesigned website by Digitas agency, viral videos, and animated online content. Most notably, a talk show called “Nite Fite.” Starburst also partnered with bloggers and YouTube influencers. It was Starburst’s deep dive into social media marketing, leveraging user-generated content and viral sharing.

UNEXPLAINABLY JUICY

This became Starburst’s primary slogan starting in 2014. The tagline highlights the candy’s intense flavors and juicy sensation. It has been used in many commercials and print ads featuring funny and unexpected scenarios. This slogan was used in the brand’s most successful viral marketing campaign, the “Little Lad Dance” advertisement from 2007. The ad featured a man in Victorian clothing performing a dance about Berries and Creme flavor.
