The Coca-Cola Company
Discontinued: 1945
The original Fanta was invented out of wartime necessity in Nazi Germany. The story goes that Coca-Cola syrup became unavailable due to trade embargoes from the United States. German Coca-Cola head Max Keith, had no choice but to create a new soda for the German brand to survive. His team invented Fanta, formulated with apple pomace, whey, and sugar beet—these were the only ingredients they could find. When Coca-Cola regained control of its German branch, it re-released Coca-Cola to the market and discontinued the original Fanta Classic. Still, they later re-released Fanta worldwide, but with a new formulation.
Discontinued: 1963
Fanta Black Cherry was Fanta’s first cherry flavor. It was released in America and lasted barely one year. The black cherry version was rereleased in the 2000s but discontinued again within a few years. Since then, it has made brief comebacks as limited fountain drinks at Burger King and gas stations.
Discontinued: 2004
Fanta Berry was supposed to be a permanent flavor. It featured a mix of strawberry and blueberry flavors, but poor sales killed it within two years. Coca-Cola revived it in 2015 to expand its American Fanta lineup. But this flavor failed again as customers couldn’t really taste its subtle berry notes. It was later replaced with a new berry flavor without the strawberry.
Discontinued: 2020
Taking its inspiration from its Nazi origins, Fanta Green Apple was known for its "crisp and invigorating" apple taste. Initial reception from consumers was positive and people found the flavor surprisingly mellow. The green apple flavor was largely available at restaurants like CiCi's Pizza as a fountain option. It was quietly purged in the 2020s.
Discontinued: 2020
Fanta Mango was released alongside the original Berry to attract millennials who were looking for exotic tastes. It was known for its sweet, syrupy mango taste with light carbonation. Despite its popularity, Coca-Cola axed it during its massive 2020 portfolio reduction.
Discontinued: 2020
Fanta Wild Cherry was the shortest-lived flavor in the brand’s history. The soda debuted as a fountain exclusive before expanding to cans and bottles. Coca-Cola expected huge success based on regular Cherry Fanta's popularity, but Wild Cherry only lasted a year or so.
Discontinued: 2020
Little documentation exists for Fanta Red Apple, but it was available in cans through the late 2010s. It was eliminated alongside its cousin, Fanta Green Apple, in 2020.
Discontinued: 2020
Another casualty of the 2020 purge. Consumers sadly noticed Fanta Fruit Punch’s disappearance from shelves. Coca-Cola's decision to focus on core flavors (Orange, Grape, Strawberry) left fruit punch without sufficient sales to justify continued production.
