New Coke was The Coca-Cola Company’s attempt to reformulate classic Coca-Cola with a sweeter taste to compete with Pepsi. Public backlash was immediate and fierce. Coca-Cola Classic returned after 79 days, but New Coke continued in limited markets until 2002. It was renamed Coke II in 1990 and discontinued forever in July 2002.

In late 2002, a sugar-free version of the popular Vanilla Coke called Diet Vanilla Coke hit store shelves. In 2005, they changed the name to "Diet Coke Vanilla,” but the rebranding didn’t work, and they discontinued it soon after.

Launched in January 2006, Coca-Cola Black Cherry Vanilla, which is a mouthful, was available in 20-ounce, 2-liter, and 12-pack forms. It was released after the discontinuation of Diet Coke Vanilla. But with low sales figures and the return of Vanilla Coke (now Coca-Cola Vanilla), it was gone by the summer of 2007.

The company also released a Diet version of the aforementioned Black Cherry Vanilla. This diet cola was sweetened with a blend of aspartame and acesulfame potassium and was marketed as part of the Diet Coke family.

In 2019, Coca-Cola dove back into the grove and, this time came up with Coca-Cola Orange Vanilla. Around 2018, Coca-Cola went all out on a new line of Diet Coke flavors. This included several experimental and trendy flavors that, to be honest, we doubt we will ever see again. The initial Diet Coke flavor selection included Ginger Lime, Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange, and Twisted Mango. In 2019, the company released Blueberry Acai and Strawberry Guava Diet Coke flavors. Unfortunately, not all of these flavors were a great fit, and they were soon axed by the cola giant in 2020.
Discontinued: 2023
Coca-Cola fans now have to mix Cherry and Vanilla Coke on their own to enjoy this Coke flavor, which came out in February 2020. The premixed soda flavor was discontinued in late 2023 despite the popular pairing.
