PLANTERS P.B. CRISPS

Planters

Discontinued: 1995

What happens when you shape a graham cookie like a peanut shell and fill it with creamy peanut butter? You create P.B. Crisps.

Each bite of P.B. Crisps delivered a perfect crunch followed by smooth, sweet peanut butter filling. Planters even created chocolate and PB&J varieties.

You probably remember this nostalgic ’90s snack by its famous jingle: “It began with a nut and a volt, that shook his top hat with a jolt! P.B. Crisp, an idea for a munch, but with a graham cookie outside for crunch!”

Three years on the shelves, before this snack was discontinued forever. Leaving fans devastated.

PLANTERS CHEEZ BALLS

Planters

Discontinued: 2006

Before there were cheese puffs, there were Cheez Balls. These snacks were spherical, impossibly crunchy, and coated in that unforgettable neon-orange dust.

Packaged in iconic blue canisters, Cheez Balls were roughly the size of shooter marbles. They had this magical ability to dissolve into cheesy paste the moment you bit down, yet somehow maintained their satisfying crunch.

When Planters discontinued them in 2006, the internet exploded. Petitions with thousands of signatures. Facebook groups. Passionate letters to corporate headquarters.

In 2018, fan pressure worked. Planters brought them back... temporarily. Then they were gone again.

PLANTERS CHEEZ CURLS

Planters

Discontinued: 2006

While Cheez Balls got the attention, many people preferred the elongated elegance of Cheez Curls.

Same neon-orange coating, same addictive crunch, but in a more refined, oblong shape. Fans swore they had superior flavor retention and a more satisfying texture than regular Cheetos.

One guy said, “I thought the Cheez Balls were okay, but I was crazy about the Cheez Curls. Cheetos taste flat compared to Cheez Curls.”

Like its other sibling, Cheez Curls returned briefly in 2018, only to disappear again.

PLANTERS POTATO CHIPS

Planters

Discontinued: Unknown

Imagine a peanut company decides to take on Pringles. In tubes. With rigid chips.

Well, that’s exactly what Planters did in the 1970s.

Planters wasn’t content being just the nut company. Their potato chips came in distinctive Pringles-style tubes, but with a crunchier, more substantial bite thanks to their ridged design.

Those ridges weren’t just for looks, they held seasonings better and delivered superior crunch.

Nobody knows exactly when they disappeared. Perhaps Pringles’ marketing machine was too powerful. Or maybe being a nut company trying to sell potato chips was just too much of a leap for consumers.

PLANTERS NUT POPPERS

Planters

Discontinued: Late 1990s

When P.B. Crisps became a cult hit, Planters thought they had the formula figured out.

So they took the successful P.B. Crisps concept and replaced the peanut butter filling with... an actual whole peanut.

But the concept flopped. Nut Poppers were such a commercial failure that they’ve almost been erased from snack history.

PLANTERS NUT-RITION PEANUT BUTTER

Planters

Discontinued: Mid 2010s

When the health food trend hit, Planters did its best to adapt.

The company launched Mr. Peanut’s adventurous stunt double, complete with goatee and aviator sunglasses. Doug was the face of a peanut butter line that mixed in bananas, granola, berries, and cinnamon.

Three flavors: Cinnamon Raisin Granola Nut, Banana Granola Nut, and Berry Nut. Each jar promised “adventure-seekers” a more exciting peanut butter experience.

Print ads in Golf, ESPN, Fitness, and Sports Illustrated. A clear play for the active, health-conscious consumer.

Like many health food experiments, NUT-rition peanut butter faded without fanfare, taking Peanut Butter Doug with it.

PLANTERS CORN CHIPS

Planters

Discontinued: Unknown

Before Fritos dominated the corn chip game, Planters tried to create their own crunchy yellow triangles.

Details are scarce, dates are unknown, but Planters certainly produced corn chips at some point in their long history.

Perhaps they were testing whether the Mr. Peanut brand could extend beyond nuts into other crunchy snack categories.

PLANTERS PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE CRISPS

Planters

Discontinued: Unknown

In the archives of discontinued Planters products, there is mention of peanut butter cookie crisps.

Imagine combining Planters’ peanut expertise with rich fudge in cookie form. The concept alone sounds like it should have been a winner.

Why were these cookies discontinued? We may never know.
